Happy Cross Season 2 release week!
Everyone’s favourite detective is back with a new case to solve in the new season of Cross. Of course, Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge) always has a stellar team he can rely on, including Kayla Craig (Alona Tal) and John Sampson (Isaiah Mustafa).
This season, we get to see more from Alona Tal as FBI Agent Kayla Craig. Alona Tal is back in action as Kayla. In addition, Johnny Ray Gill is back as the wildly entertaining Bobby Trey.
Ahead of the highly anticipated new season, I had the wonderful opportunity to chat with Tal and Gill. The duo delved into returning to portray Kayla and Bobby Trey, the emotional stakes of Season 2, what to expect from their characters this season, and much more!

This season ups the emotional stakes for Kayla in very significant ways. Tal was eager to highlight Kayla’s complex character development and the significant choices she must make that will shape her identity this season.
“How much she has to balance and maintain and be proficient throughout the entire time, right? And having to deal with actual repercussions and having to make constant choices that will redefine who she is,” Tal explained.
Gill expressed his excitement about returning to the show, particularly the creative risks and the opportunity to delve deeper into his character.
“Working with the cast and seeing what the writers was going to cook up. I was trying to see if it’s going to have me naked again or something. [laughs] I’m just always excited to play with this – what feels like a theatre company. So I was just ready to see what risk we was going to be taking,” Gill shared.

Together, the duo discussed the surprising interconnectedness of their characters and the trust built on set while working together. Tal had nothing but amazing things to share about Gill as a person and an actor.
“You know, we actually go back quite a while, and we’ve had the pleasure of doing some other things that hopefully you guys will be able to see someday,” Tal shared. “But I don’t know – he’s one of my favourite people, because not only as a person, is he delightful and intelligent and knowledgeable, there’s so much more depth to his choices than anybody actually knows. Like you would have to just get a small glimpse into the heart of this man to know that every choice that’s made there is not arbitrary, and it’s not done just for the sake of entertainment. There’s actual deep, deep reasons to his choices. And I really enjoy that, and it challenges me a little bit to up my game. It’s like playing with – and I can say that for most of the cast – but particularly you, is that it’s like playing any sort of sport, with somebody who’s better than you. It ups your game.”
It’s difficult to sum up a series like Cross in just one word, but I challenged Tal and Gill with just that for the upcoming season.
“Explosive,” Gill said confidently.
“Ooh, one word. Why do you limit me to one word? Relevant,” Tal replied.
