Netflix’s Blood of Zeus comes to its epic conclusion with its third and final season on May 8!

With only one more day until Season 3 releases, you might have to brush up on the characters throughout the series and their importance throughout the journey. Based on Greek mythology, many characters might already be familiar to audiences, such as Zeus, Hera, Ares, Hades, Athena, and a plethora of other gods and goddesses.

While the gods are hella cool, they’re not the series’ main characters. The main characters in Blood of Zeus, Heron and Seraphim, are not in Greek myths. These characters were created to expand on the myths already known. While they may have some similarities to other protagonists and antagonists in Greek mythology, they are characters created for the series by Charley and Vlas Parlapanides.

Just like their creators, Heron and Seraphim are brothers; an element to their stories that they were unaware of when audiences first met them in Season 1. Both are the sons of Electra, but they have different fathers. Heron is a demigod and son of Zeus, while Seraphim is the human turned demon son of the tyrant King Periander.

With many key characters at play, the world and will of the gods collide in Blood of Zeus, causing calamity and chaos for demigods, demons and humans alike throughout the series. This makes for an impressive and intriguing tale, with some of the best character work I’ve seen in animation and beyond. So, let’s get into the power players in Blood of Zeus without further ado.

The Demigods, Demons & Humans

Heron

The son of Electra and Zeus, Heron (voiced by Derek Phillips), is the main protagonist in the series, and we see his journey unfold throughout multiple seasons. When he finds out about his lineage, he is drawn into the chaotic world of the gods, trying to find his place in their world and his own. With the hatred of several Olympians following him at all times, Heron always has to watch his back, but he doesn’t allow their threats to steer him from his purpose or journey, especially with a phenomenal team by his side. Amid all the chaos, Heron remains true to himself, fighting for what is right and protecting his loved ones, no matter the cost.

Electra

Electra in Blood of Zeus.(Photo courtesy of Netflix)

The mother of Heron and Seraphim, Electra (voiced by Mamie Gummer), fell in love with Zeus when he posed as her husband, and that is when she became pregnant with Heron. However, she was pregnant with another baby, this one, the son of King Periander. When the tyrant king found out, he took the child that was his and tried to kill Heron. Zeus intervened, and Electra escaped with Heron, but it devastated her to leave Seraphim behind. Forced to live in a small village full of small-minded people, Electra was shunned for being an unwed mother. She raised Heron with a sense of purpose, kindness and strength, helping him to become the man we see throughout the series.

Seraphim

The main antagonist of Heron, Seraphim (voiced by Elias Toufexis), is Electra’s other son. Dealt an extremely unfair hand, including being separated from his mother, the murder of his adoptive mother, and the death of his true love, Seraphim turned to dark places to numb the pain from all his losses. After feeding on the flesh of a dead giant, Seraphim became the demon that audiences first meet in the series. He also wields the bident of Hades, which he found in the giant’s flesh. After amassing others to his calling, Seraphim started an army of demons and continues his quest to seek vengeance against all those who wronged him or had anything to do with the deaths of those he held most dear.

Alexia

Alexia in Blood of Zeus - The Characters of Blood of Zeus

The Grand Archon of the Amazons, Alexia (voiced by Jessica Henwick), is one of Heron’s first friends and allies on his journey. Trained by the centaur god, Chiron, Alexia’s purpose is to always fight for what is right, something that is shown during one of her interactions with Heron in the first season when he is getting attacked and bullied by some of the townspeople. Alexia is strong-willed, intelligent, and a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. While she’s seen as one of Heron’s most steadfast and trusted partners, there may be more than allyship between them.

Kofi & Evios

Kofi in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

A warrior and a wise-talking thief who were both captured by Seraphim and his demons, Kofi (voiced by Adetokumboh M’Cormack) and Evios (voiced by Chris Diamantopoulos) join Heron on his quest after meeting him in captivity. Kofi and Evios are the epitome of opposites attract. Still, the dynamic duo works well together, which Heron and Alexia notice when they join them to hunt down demons. Unaware that this would lead them to the doorsteps of the gods, Kofi and Evios showed true bravery during the War of Olympus. Despite the uncertainty and frequent death threats, the two remain Heron’s steadfast companions for the next two seasons.

The Gods & Goddesses

Zeus

Zeus in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

The ruler of Mount Olympus, Zeus (voiced by Jason O’Mara), is the god of authority, sky, and thunder. He is the father of Heron and many other gods and demigods. Throughout the series, he’s both a blessing and a curse to those he surrounds himself with. While he is someone you wouldn’t want to cross and want in your corner, his presence also signals trouble for many reasons. Alongside Hera and the other gods, Zeus defeated the giants during the Gigantomachy. However, his constant straying spurs Hera’s revenge and begins the War for Olympus. The Almighty Zeus has to pay the price for his wrongdoings, and he is unaware of the kind of wrath he’s accidentally unleashed upon humans, gods and demons alike.

Hera

Alongside Hera and the other gods, Zeus defeated the giants during the Gigantomachy. The couple were happy, but Hera’s rage and pettiness grew due to Zeus’ frequent philandering (rightly so). However, how Hera decided to enact her wrath was indeed questionable. Many innocents, including Electra, were caught between the crossfire of her and Zeus. In addition to her husband, Heron was one of Hera’s primary targets, along with Seraphim. Seeking to bring chaos to their lives, the way that it was brought to hers, Hera initiated the Gigantomachy, declaring war against her husband and Olympus. Not to spoil anything for people who have yet to watch all the seasons of Blood of Zeus, Hera has one of the best character arcs in the entire series.

Ares

Ares in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

The first-born son of Hera and Zeus, Ares (voiced by Matt Lowe), is the god of war and one of Heron’s antagonists; he despises his demigod half-brother. Ares sides with his mother, Hera,  before the attack on Olympus. When the funeral games take place, Ares takes out much of his ire on Heron despite the protests of the other gods and goddesses. A brilliant combatant, Ares doesn’t hold back in his fight with Heron. More of Ares’s personality and anger are displayed between the first and second seasons, particularly when we learn of his part in Persephone’s story.

Apollo

Apollo in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

The god of the sun, plagues, prophecy, and visions, Apollo (voiced by Adam Croasdell), is the son of Zeus and Leto, and the twin brother of Artemis. In addition to fighting with the gods during the Gigantanomachy, Apollo also covers for Zeus with Hera, when she nearly catches him red-handed during his affair with Electra. He takes his father’s place and tells Electra she is with child. Like Athena, Apollo is one of the only gods welcoming to Heron when Zeus brings him to Olympus. During the War for Olympus, Apollo delivers a bow and arrows crafted by Hephaestus to Heron.

Athena

Athena in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

The first-born daughter of Zeus from his marriage to Metis, Athena (voiced by Sarah Elmaleh), is the goddess of wisdom, strategic warfare, crafts, and the defence of cities, and is a recurring character throughout Blood of Zeus. Athena is first seen in the series fighting alongside the other gods during the Gigantomachy. After that, she recurs in various episodes, frequently clashing with her brother, Ares. Athena gets many chances to shine in the second season, including aiding Hestia in securing the Eleusinian Stone. The pair are tracked and attacked by Hades’ Shadows, displaying her quickness and fighting skills all the while. Athena is one of the gods who shows kindness toward her half-brother, Heron.

Hades

Hades in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

The God of the Underworld, the dead, and darkness, Hades (voiced by Fred Tatasciore), often clashes with his siblings, including Zeus. Just like his other siblings, Hades was eaten by Kronos when he was born. He was saved by Zeus and participated alongside the gods in the Titanomachy and Gigantomachy. Hades comes into play at the end of the first season after the War for Olympus. With the chance from the Fates to secure the Eleusinian Stone, Hades sends his Shadows to find it. Flashbacks of Hades’ story and romance with Persephone are depicted, including his fight with his nephew, Ares, and the disdain of his mother-in-law, Demeter, who disapproves of their relationship. There’s much more to say, but I don’t want to spoil things for those who haven’t seen the second season yet. You’ll have to watch the series to find out more about Hades. You won’t be disappointed.

Persephone

Persephone in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

The daughter of Demeter and Zeus, Persephone (voiced by Lara Pulver), is the goddess of spring, vegetation and prosperity. As the wife of Hades, she’s the Queen of the Underworld. The second season of Blood of Zeus focuses heavily on Persephone and her relationship with her husband. Persephone ate from a pomegranate to ensure she was bound to the Underworld, defying her mother’s will. The look at the underworld and her relationship with her overbearing mother, Demeter, is depicted extremely well in the show. Persephone must spend time in and out of the underworld based on the agreement that she returns to Olympus once every winter season is over.

Chiron

Chiron in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

While not a god of Olympus, Chiron (voiced by David Shaughnessy) is a centaur god, and the son of Kronos and Philyra. Chiron was the keeper of Zeus’ son, Heracles, and of the Amazon, Alexia. The soft-spoken and wise centaur trained Alexia, helping her become one of the best warriors. When Alexia visits Chiron after a long time away, she’s surprised he’s betrayed her. Chiron’s hand was forced, and he had to make the agonizing decision between his centaur family and Alexia. However, Chiron made things right when he hid the real map that Seraphim was looking for and gave it to Alexia to help her on her journey.

Demeter

Demeter in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

Goddess of the harvest and agriculture, Demeter (voiced by Cissy Jones) is the sister of Hades, Hestia, Poseidon, Zeus and half-sister of Chiron. The mother of Persephone, Demeter, is quite overprotective of her daughter, Persephone. Demeter is one of the many gods who participated in the war between Hera and Zeus. When her daughter Persephone goes missing, she is shocked to find her in the underworld with Hades. Disapproving of their relationship, Demeter finds an unlikely pseudo-ally in Hades when she learns of his attempts to steal the Eleusinian Stone.

Hermes

Hermes in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

God of messengers, travel, and thieves, Hermes (voiced by Matthew Mercer) is the son of Zeus and Maia. The swiftest of all the gods, he is the messenger of Olympus, something seen frequently in Blood of Zeus. Like the rest of his family, Hermes fought against the giants during the Gigantomachy, and he fought again during the War for Olympus against his stepmother, Hera. Hermes also guides the souls of the dead to the underworld. Hermes’ armband allows him to collect souls in the show, so Hera covets it before the War for Olympus.

Hestia

Hestia in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

Goddess of the hearth, fire, family and sacrifice, Hestia (voiced by Vanessa Marshall), is the sister of Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Demeter and Hera. Hestia is seen in the opening episode of Season 2 during the Gigantomachy, where Zeus asks her to retrieve the Eleusinian Stone and bring it to Gaia. Hestia retrieves the stone alongside Athena, but Hades’ Shadows attack the pair. Forced to fight and flee, Hestia eventually escapes the Shadows and the Keres (the eaters of the dead) and arrives in Crete to give the stone to Gaia. She later participated in the fight for the stone against Demeter and Hades.

Hephaestus

Hephaestus in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

God of blacksmithing, craftsmanship, forge, and volcanoes, Hephaestus (voiced by David Shaughnessy), is the son of Zeus and Hera. Hephaestus, the blacksmith for the gods, created the cauldron during the Gigantomachy to store the giants’ souls. Hephaestus was integral in helping Heron in his journey and his participation in the War for Olympus. Hephaestus crafted a special new bow and arrows for Heron ahead of the battle. In the second season, Hephaestus gifted Heron a compass that could lead him to a piece of the adamantine used to forge a sword in Seraphim’s possession.

Artemis

Artemis in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

The daughter of Zeus and Leto, and twin sister of Apollo, Artemis (voiced by Jennifer Hale) is the goddess of the moon and the hunt. A minor character in the first season, mainly in the background, until she and some of her siblings meet Heron for the first time. During the War for Olympus, Artemis fights against Hera, killing dozens of enemies, a blow to her stepmother’s fight. The battle for Olympus isn’t the only one Artemis joins throughout the series; she also joins Athena’s side in the battle for the Eleusinian Stone.

Poseidon

Poseidon in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

God of the seas and earthquakes, Poseidon (voiced by Chris Diamantopoulos), is the brother of Demeter, Hades, Hestia, and Zeus and half-brother of Chiron. In the first season of Blood of Zeus, Poseidon participated in the Gigantomachy, fighting alongside the other gods to defeat the giants. After Hermes trapped their souls, Poseidon cast the bodies of the giants into the ocean. Throughout the first season, Poseidon is one of the gods who reminds Zeus to act accordingly and not intervene in the lives of humankind. However, in true Zeus fashion, he doesn’t listen and breaks the laws the Olympians must abide by. Poseidon sides with Hera, reminding his brother that only a fool would anger her. However, when it came to the War for Olympus, Poseidon fought alongside Zeus to try to stop the giants.

Fates

The Fates in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

The trio of goddesses consists of Lachesis, the allotter, Clotho, the spinner, and Atropos, the unturnable (all three voiced by Jennifer Hale). Each Fate symbolized the life cycle, with Lachesis representing birth, Clotho representing life, and Atropos representing death. Little is known about the three sisters. However, they appear throughout the series, summoning different gods and goddesses. In the first season, they call to Heron and tell him the world’s fate resides in his hands. In the second season, they appear to him in his dream and reveal information that will be of great importance come the third and final season.

Hecate

Hecate in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

The goddess of witchcraft, magic and sorcery, Hecate (voiced by Courtenay Taylor), helped the gods imprison Typhon, the father of all monsters, and is the guardian of the Eleusinian Stone, which holds the powers Hecate stripped from Typhon. Using her witchcraft, Hecate claimed that as long as Typhon’s name was never uttered, he would remain dormant under Mount Etna. Hecate’s spell casting and witchcraft will continue to be important in Season 3.

Gaia

Gaia in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

The primordial goddess of the earth and the mother of Titans, Gaia (voiced by Jean Gilpin), is an integral figure in Blood of Zeus. Zeus instructs his sister, Hestia, to take the Eleusinian Stone to Gaia. Gaia says she will honour Zeus and help his son (Heron). Throughout Season 2, Gaia attempts to show the gods the error of their ways, specifically how their lack of forgiveness is causing more harm than they would admit. While this is directed toward all of the gods’ treatment of one another, it’s primarily meant toward their treatment of Hera. After Gaia witnesses more than she can bear, she chastises the gods and tells them that none are worthy of the Eleusinian Stone’s power. Her final act at the end of Season 2 starts the catalyst for what to expect in Season 3.

Cronos

Cronos in Blood of Zeus. (Photo courtesy of Netflix)

The main antagonist in Season 3, Cronos (voiced by Alfred Molina), was the Titan of Time, married to Rhea. With Rhea, Cronos had six children: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus. When a prophecy foretold Cronos that one of his children would overthrow him, he swallowed each newborn. However, Rhea managed to save Zeus by tricking Cronos. Instead of eating the newborn Zeus, he was given rocks swaddled in a blanket, which he ingested instead. Watch the third and final season of Blood of Zeus to see what Cronos has in store for the series’ characters.
