Ryan Coogler’s latest feature is bound to become one of the year’s biggest hits and a sure-fire critical success. Coogler has built a steady career showcasing his ability to tell sensitive, humane stories, epic narratives about good and bad, and capture the dynamism of movement, whether it be boxing, fighting or dancing.

With only five films under his belt, Coogler has immense pull and a loyal fanbase, so Sinners, his latest collaboration with Michael B. Jordan, is set to bring the heat with a sultry, thrilling, and impactful tale about vampires in the Southern states.

Ryan Coogler exploded into the scene with his emotionally impactful feature directorial debut, Fruitvale Station. Starring his longtime muse, Michael B. Jordan, the film follows the life of Oscar Grant, specifically the events leading to his untimely, unjust death by police officers.

Coogler followed up with 2015’s sports drama Creed. A spin-off of the Rocky series, it follows the young Adonis Creed, son of former Rocky rival, Apollo Creed. Coogler elevated his directing prowess by injecting a great amount of vibrancy and freshness to the long-running film series.

Unsurprisingly, Marvel picked up the rising star to direct the first solo adaptation of the character Black Panther, the first feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) starring a nearly all-Black cast. Black Panther follows Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa fight for the throne after being challenged by the ruthless Killmonger (Jordan). Black Panther, by every metric, was a bona fide hit, a mega success that cemented Coogler’s legacy as a visionary director. To this day, it is the highest-grossing film directed by a Black filmmaker. This success made it a no-brainer that Coogler would return to direct the sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and hopefully he will return for the third.

Sinners is the latest feature from Coogler and Jordan, the latter doing double duty playing twins. The supernatural horror film set in the 1930s features an ensemble cast featuring Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, Hailee Steinfeld, Jayme Lawson and Jack O’Connell.
